The first series of sessions with Vincent Longuermare
Registration is now open for Vincent Longuermare’s advanced theoretical and practical workshop on lighting, organised by Hangar Teatri Trieste – the first of four sessions, taking place from 25 to 30 August 2026.
Six days shut away in the theatre, in the dark, with time stretching out and suddenly speeding up, will not be without its difficulties, as we will have to navigate and come to terms with our perception in relation to lighting technology, and attempt to identify and make use of the tools of our perception. Six days to gain experience through light, to learn to see, recognise and name, in search of a common language based on the objective laws of perception, physics and optics, and lighting technology applied to the material. Every technical gesture, even in its everyday nature, must be a thought of light; every thought must take the form of a precise technical gesture capable of revealing the design. Every light source that is switched on speaks; it uses a language that we must learn to speak and render in images.
Light as Matter: The Alphabet and Grammar is a practical and theoretical course on light as a language, ranging from training the eye to the grammar of light (direction, intensity, colour, movement), right through to stage composition and the creation of your own lighting design.
THEMATIC AREAS
1) The instrument, the eye, the laws of perception, seeing-recognising-naming (vision matrix exercise)
2) Training the eye, the stage as a metaphor for the terrestrial sphere, the circadian rhythm, observing space, acting within space
3) Let’s switch on a light: the technical cage, the lamps, the lens, the optical axis, physical and optical manifestations (vision matrix exercise)
4) The theoretical practice of light, aiming, applying one’s own thinking to the definition of light, coordinating gesture and thought with rigour (vision exercises)
5) Introduction to the grammar of light
6) The four qualities of light: direction, intensity, colour and movement, vision exercises
7) The first two: Direction and Intensity (vision exercises)
8) Introduction to composition: learning to see is already composing
9) Practising the four functions of light: creating space, creating relief and form, creating atmosphere, creating time
10) Final exercise: producing a short drawing of light
